UM Baltimore Office of Tech Transfer Names Winner of 10th Annual Graduate Translational Research Award

Thursday, May 3, 2018

The UM Baltimore Office of Tech Transfer (OTT) has named Erin McClure, a UMSOM PhD candidate working with Associate Professor Joao Pedra, PhD, as the winner of the 10th Annual Graduate Translational Research Award. Erin’s research focuses on the study of the biological pathways involved in the tick immune system. Ultimately, she aims to contribute to an improved understanding of tick immunity that can be leveraged to develop tick-focused strategies to prevent Lyme disease transmission. Over 300,000 estimated cases of Lyme disease occurred in the United States in 2015 alone, which were estimated to cost between $700 million and $1.3 billion in direct medical expenditures. Erin’s research project is funded by a pre-doctoral F31 fellowship from the National Institutes of Health.
