The University of Maryland, College Park Facilitates Access to Lifesaving Technologies During COVID-19 Pandemic

Friday, April 10, 2020

The University of Maryland, College Park joins other major research institutions in implementing technology licensing principles that ensure equitable access to technologies enabling prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of COVID-19. The joint “COVID-19 Technology Access Framework,” initially implemented by Stanford University, Harvard University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, establishes guidelines providing for non-exclusive, royalty-free licensing of intellectual property rights for many COVID-related technologies during the pandemic and for a short period afterward. Licensees commercializing these urgently needed innovations will be required to distribute the resulting products as widely as possible and at a low cost that allows broad accessibility.

The signatories' formal commitments are outlined in the complete COVID-19 Technology Access Framework.

The University of Maryland, College Park has also signed on to the Association of University Technology Managers' (AUTM) COVID-19 licensing guidelines to rapidly facilitate transfers of innovations aimed at protecting the community.
