The new design integrates high conductivity garnet-type solid lithium-ion electrolytes and electrodes into tailored micro- or nano- structures. The key ingredient of the new design is a surface coating that remarkably decreases the interfacial resistance of the electrode-electrolyte interface and improves the binding of lithium metal with garnet solid electrolyte. The result is increased discharge ability without mechanical cycling fatigue combined with improved thermal uniformity, strength, weight, and form factor. Fabrication processes that use conventional ceramic processing equipment in ambient air without the need of dry rooms, vacuum deposition, or glove boxes lead to significantly lower manufacturing costs.
