Print Save as PDF

Overview

Researchers at the University of Maryland have created REVEAL (Research-Enhanced Virtual Environment for Acquiring Language), a method and associated system for providing an immersive 360-degree cinematic video language training experience to individuals learning a foreign language or receiving training or therapy in their first language. The goal of the system is to mimic and enhance aspects of the language immersion experience thought to be most important for functional language use.

The system utilizes immersive 360-degree visuals and spatial audio to create a virtual environment in which learners can hone their situational awareness, sharpen their active listening skills, and rehearse speaking skills. Learners interact with the environment through a combination of hand held controllers and gesture based interfaces. Interactions may include an actor talking directly to the learner (i.e., a camera), prompting a verbal or other response.

Applications

· foreign language and culture learning at any level
· workplace training
· therapy for impairments in individuals’ first language or impairment in social skills

Advantages
